Paradise on earth, the Maldives is the destination you visit to be cocooned in carefree idleness in tropical splendour. Although most parts of the world are hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the archipelago of shimmering atolls that comprises the Maldives seem to provide respite to the ones who wish to take a break from the pandemic and enjoy the much-missed ‘old normal’.
The country’s largest industry, the tourism sector has seen an increase in the number of travellers visiting the country although the overall national visitor numbers are still down on pre-pandemic levels. The Maldives has recorded 148,744 tourist arrivals since January 2021 up until February. Tourist arrivals since reopening have been largely from Russia and India. Moreover, the number of travellers coming from France, Germany, Ukraine, the Middle East, America as well as the United Kingdom also top the charts.
The Maldives also launched their very first COVID-19 vaccination programme during the month of February. The Ministry of Tourism launched a programme to vaccinate frontline staff who represent the tourism sector, which in turn will create a positive impact on the industry and boost travellers’ confidence to visit the Maldives.
Furthermore, there are currently over 140 resorts open for tourism along with 330 Guesthouses, and 11 Hotels. At the moment, 27 international airlines are connecting the Maldives with the rest of the world where tourists are able to travel and access the island nation without a hassle.
The most interesting part is that there are absolutely no mandatory quarantine procedures for tourists. However, all tourists are required to fill in a Health Declaration Form within 24 hours prior to their departures an also submit a Negative PCR Test Result conducted within 96 hours prior to their time of departure.
So let’s get back to the pristine beaches, witness otherworldly sunsets, explore the world underwater, dine à deux on mid-ocean sandbanks, and live out your tropical fantasy!
